A Day of Adventures (Trinidad) – 19th August, 2017

Hey guys,

For those of you who haven’t read my ‘About Me’, I’m from this small island in the Caribbean known as Trinidad and Tobago. I’ve decided to curate a short list of things/activities one can do/enjoy, either as a ‘Trini’ or a visitor. This was based on a day of adventuring with my family whilst in the Northern part of Trinidad.

Green Market Santa Cruz

For a full review on the GMSC, there’s an entire post dedicated to it. Feel free to take a read. This particular day at GM was ‘Coconut Day’. As such, there was a variety of food, jewelry, lotions and soaps made from coconut. Unfortunately, by the time we arrived, most of the special coconut items were finished. We happened to pick up some soaps from a vendor we never purchased from before, ‘The windows of heaven spa collection’. I was most intrigued by the colour of the soaps, as you can tell from the photo below. Aren’t they just the prettiest. My cousin, who was visiting, purchased a bracelet from another vendor. One of the beads was made out of coconut and you can apparently put essential oils on it for an added touch. As for the food, there were a lot of coconut desserts like cupcakes and chocolates. If you check out GM’s insta page,  you would see much more things that were featured. My mom also picked up a curried duck roti with coconut chutney and fresh guava, pineapple juice from another stall. We finished off our time there with some real, fruit lollies (eatlocaltt) and buffalo wings from another vendor whose name I also didn’t get *sigh* but she also has sushi, if that helps as a clue (when I find out, I’ll definitely update this post). My apologies for the lack of vendors’ names. Since it was a ‘themed day’ at the Market, there were a lot of people and I don’t really do well with overly crowded places.

Chocolate Bar Cafe

I have been dying to go there and was so delighted that it was literally next door to GM. It’s literally what the name suggests, chocolate-y goodness that is local. It’s a nice, medium- sized cafe with dining both inside and out. We opted for dining in since it was ridiculously hot outside that day but I wanna dine out when it’s cooler (you will see why from the photos). The menu is mostly local with brunch options like pancakes, bagels and paninis. The hot chocolate and ice cream is actually served in an enamel cup which is such a major throwback for us Trinis. I will include their full menu from their FB page. We had the strangest combo: pepper fries, mocha coffee and ice cream. That mocha coffee is to die for, it’s one of the BEST tasting drinks I’ve ever had and I haven’t stopped craving it since then! Final thoughts: I assumed the menu would have included a couple more chocolate items and I wished they had more cold ‘hot chocolate’ options but that’s just my humble opinion. I truly did enjoy what I did have from their menu and I’m down for another trip!

Safari Eco Park

Trinidad recently got a somewhat petting zoo and it’s all the rage with adults and kids alike. This was such a spur of the moment thing. We were actually heading out of Macqueripe Bay when we ended up there. It was pretty cool. There’s an entrance fee for both adults and kids and you can also purchase food to feed to the animals. Or you can book a private tour and take photos with the animals up close and personal. I’m guessing because of the insanely hot weather that day, the animals were a bit burnt out. The camel was the most interactive animal and the horse, a little. The only downside, for me, was seeing them in cages. I couldn’t help but feel sorry. However, this isn’t a sap post. It’s a nice experience since these animals aren’t at our local zoo and well, you have the opportunity to touch and feed them.

Caffé del Mare

Caffé del Mare is a part of the Crews Inn Hotel and Yacht Club. It’s described as a “quaint coffee shop”overlooking the Chaguaramas Yacht Club. This is such a cute and relaxing spot. Quaint could not have been a better way to describe it. I’ll advise to go for breakfast or like us, around sunset, in the evening. Their menu is also mostly breakfast/ brunch and not local. I also kind of wished for just a little more diversity, in terms of the type of items. See the picks below for the items we purchased – everything tasted good – and also the impeccable views.

Macqueripe Bay

Kudos to Destination TnT for rendering not only an apt description of MB but succinctly covering its historical background:

“Situated at the base of a hill, your visit to the beach will take you down a stepped-concrete walkway from the car park to the sand below. From the walkway the view of the bay is spectacular and on a clear day you can see the Venezuelan main land in the distance. The walkway meanders through a well-cared for garden which makes the destination even more picturesque. If you are looking for a tan, this is not the beach for you, as the tropical forest covered hillside creates considerable protection from the sun. As well, the waves break high up on the narrow beach so there is very little room to lay a towel without getting wet. But Macqueripe makes up for its limited sand real estate with its generally calm, deep waters in which swimming is delightful. It is this deep water bay that made Macqueripe ideal as a US submarine station during World War II, when the Americans occupied Trinidad’s North West peninsula. Before then, the bay was the picturesque backdrop to the Macqueripe Beach Club, comprising a hotel and several cottages owned by Sir George Fredrick Huggins in 1924. During the American occupation from 1941 – 1972 the Club was run as an entertainment centre for the families of the American officers. At the beach area there are also benches. There are public toilets and changing rooms. There are hiking trails in the mountains that border the bay. The latest attraction is zip lining”.

What really differentiates Macqueripe from other bays/beaches in T&T is its intriguing past. Need I say more?

I’ll just mention that there’s a small fee to enter for use of the beach and a shop you can purchase drinks and snacks from. As for the zip lining, you’re literally gliding through the trees. Haven’t tried it as yet but I’ve only heard good things.

It’s a Haul.

Blog- Small haul.jpg

It was only after I created the above graphic, I realised that I have another blog post with this title. Whoops.

I’ve been on a makeup hiatus for a good while now. In comparison to this time last year, I haven’t purchased that amount of makeup. I wasn’t really intrigued by most of the products, especially with the considerable hype some products get. Anyway, the following are items that I’ve really wanted to try and just haven’t gotten around to doing so.

N.B. All prices are quoted in TT dollars.

  • L.A Girl Pro Coverage Foundation in White (foundation lightener)IMG_1141

I picked this up because basically none of my foundations match me, at the moment. Somehow, everyone in Trinidad matches me 5 shades darker than I am. It was between this and the Coverfx drops which are around $200. I didn’t feel like dishing out that money. Haven’t tried this out as yet but I really do hope it works out. Got it at Wonderful World in Westmall for $65.

  • Ofra Long Lasting Liquid Lipstick in Americano

IMG_1142

This is the only item that I’ve used before and absolutely loved. Ofra’s liquid lipstick is one of my favourite liquid lipsticks as outlined in this blog post. I’ve been dying to get my hands on this shade, having swatched it at Starlite Pharm. It was sold out for a while until this time when I finally scored it. It’s a gorgeous nude for us women of colour and as you can see from the tube, there’s a hint of duo-chrome so it’s not a boring, flat nude. I actually want to compare it to this L.A. Colors lipstick mentioned in this post since they’re a bit similar.

  • L’oreal Lash Paradise in Black

IMG_1144

We are fully aware that this mascara is all the rage right now. I was so excited when I found it in Pennywise, Chaguanas for only $61. Also haven’t used it as yet but I can’t wait to! L’oreal mascaras are some of my favourites.

  • Royal & Langnickel Buffer Brush

IMG_1147

This is another item that we recently got in Trinidad and I couldn’t wait to try it, as well. At just $50 in Wonderful World, I can already tell that this brush is gonna be a holygrail. I was blown away by the design of this brush since it’s so affordable. The bristles are so soft and the brush itself has a weight to it that you wouldn’t expect which makes it feel more luxurious. Now I really wanna try more brushes from this brand!

My only gripe is that it’s situated in the absolutely worst spots in all of the Wonderful World stores I’ve been to. It’s so difficult to reach the brushes since they’re pretty much on the floor. I really hope that they relocate them!

  • Milani Color Statement Moisture Matte Lipstick in Matte Naked

IMG_1145

Similarly to the brush mentioned above, Milani’s lipstick also resembles that of a luxurious brand. With it’s gold, not cheap-y packaging and contrasting affordable price tag at around $50 something dollars in Wonderful World. It swatched really nicely but it seems like a colour that I’d have to work with as it may be a bit light for me.

This bring us to the end of this small haul. Hope you all enjoy and per usual, let me know if you’ve tried these products and what are y’all thoughts!

Review: Up your make-up removal game with this product!

Was that too click-baity?

From the moment I’ve started using makeup removal oils, MAC’s Cleanse off oil was all that I used. I randomly decided to try it out, one day at the MAC counter. I was so impressed. With only just a few pumps, it melts off makeup in a couple of seconds. Whether it was light makeup, medium- full coverage, waterproof mascara and none other than the headache that is liquid lipstick. That ish dissolved EVERYTHING. However, the one con was that it was pricey, my God. I don’t mind spending money on something that is of great quality and actually does its job. But dammnn, that wasn’t something I could consistently purchase, seeing that both my Mom and I use so it finishes even quicker.

Now, let me stop rambling on about MAC’s Cleanse off oil, which I still love, and get to the good stuff. Fast forward to a couple of months ago to an unplanned day at Starlite Pharmacy in Maraval. One of my fave places in Trinidad; they also take most of my money. Anyway, I knew I needed a new bottle of cleanse off oil but (1) I couldn’t make it to MAC and (2) I was finding it too hard to pay that price. Oh what a dilemma. I was scouring through the aisles in Starlite to see if another brand there carried something similar. I noticed something from Neutrogena but I hadn’t heard reviews so I was a bit skeptical. However, my Mom went ahead and pumped this oil that wasn’t a sample, mind you, onto her hands. I hope no one who works there reads this haha. I’m assuming no safety lock was on so it was quite easy. Just like that, the makeup that was on her hands (actual tester makeup) completely wiped off. To top it off, it smelled soo good, kinda citrusy. That’s when I discovered the wonder that is “Neutrogena’s Ultra Light Cleansing Oil”.

Neutrogena Cleanse Off Oil Post

I will conclude by saying that it performed just like MAC’s; it removed a full face of makeup and most importantly, liquid lipstick. No residue remains as compared to the MAC that has some residue. It never broke me out though my skin is sometimes sensitive and the scent neither bothers me nor irritates my skin. I’ve also never had any issues with the packaging i.e. the pump breaking/ malfunctioning. I should add to this by saying that I do follow-up with a cleanser after and sometimes, micellar water (if need be).

All in all, it’s a fantastic and affordable product. I obviously purchased mine here at Starlite Pharmacy for roughly $70 something TT dollars. I haven’t seen it at Pennywise but I’ve heard it’s at Superpharm, haven’t confirmed that as yet. For everyone else, you can get the 4.0 oz bottle off Ulta’s website for $8.99 US dollars or Amazon for $7.73 US (4.0 oz) and $7.42 (4.5 oz ).

I hope you all found this post to be informative. I know everyone’s skin is different so my experience may not be similar to yours. But if you do try it, let me know how it goes.

Till next time…
